James is a veteran of the United States Marines who fought in World War II from 1943-1946. He is a survivor of Iwo Jima which was one of the bloodiest battles to take place in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Six thousand eight hundred American service members lost their lives and nearly twenty six thousand were wounded. Out of the nearly twenty one thousand Japanese soldiers entrenched on the island, eighteen thousand of them were killed or died by ritual suicide.
At 91 years old, James uses a walker and is unable to use steps to get in and out of his home. Leaving his home became challenging and stressful.
Songs4Soldiers teamed up with the Home Depot of Champaign, Illinois. Mike, Store Operations Manager, and his crew built a back yard deck and ramp for this worthy veteran to be able to enjoy the outside again. When asked about how this makes him feel, James said “I just can’t believe all of these nice young folks would do this for an old guy like me.”
Home Depot has been a vital partner for Songs4Soldiers in assisting veterans with basic construction projects and home repairs. Thank you, Home Depot and to all of our supporters and donors for helping us carry out this worthy cause.
